Last week, I finally came in at symmetrical 2’s on the Functional Movement screen. It’s most likely the first time since a rotator cuff tear over a decade ago (followed by two more injuries on the same shoulder), and definitely the first time since I came to FMS in 2011.

The Path to Success

While attending Brett Jones’ FMS Foundational Strength course as a refresher earlier this year, he fired me up again with the belief there were further improvements to make. Since then I followed a program I put together — heavily emphasizing “removing the negatives” in addition to a non-negotiable time investment in daily movement improvement — with solid success.

I never thought I could get to this level of improvement and functioning. I feel like I can finally move on from being a “rehab person” now. This FMS stuff really works!

What Comes Next?

The next interesting thing will be to maintain it as I re-integrate some previous activities I took out of my current programming. Tentative forays reveal that I likely need some more programming to hold the 2’s in a dynamic form rather than mere static stability…But that’s another story.

Keep It Up!

Best of luck to anyone else who is rehabbing a current or an old problem. Please remember that with input and persistence and work, it can come together, even after a long time of being messed up. Feel free to contact me if you need advice.
