Because “I am” is better than “I will,” and “I did” is even better
Grandiose statements of 180-degree life changes are a classic route to failure. Yeah, right, now it will all be different, just ‘cause you said so!
If I were to pick my own “now I’ll be perfect” thing, it would be using technology and social media comfortably. Everything would be frequent, witty, and informative, and I’d never get overly stressed or feel like throwing any pieces of technology out—or better yet, through—the window.
So what’s helping with that?
The principle of “Just do it!” …Even if it’s not a perfect fit or a comfortable place to be.
For example, I have a client who’s a tough nut to crack in that her neck likes to “help” with everything. After making sure people have had medical input, I often scale them back to focusing on breathing, usually face-up with the knees bent. In her case, even that provoked neck tension.
I decided to bite the bullet a few weeks ago and ask a question on an on-line forum. Well, thank you, Brett Jones and FMS! I’d never considered the “90/90” position. Using that, she was able to breathe without neck involvement. We’re finally able to add in more progressive challenges and reinforce good movement patterns.
Just get going
Another way I do this is to set a timer, then just start doing something, anything pertinent, really. I find that once the bell rings, I’m often happy to keep going because good momentum is underway.
And you? Do you have physical goals you need to un-stick yourself on? What’s the step you’re taking to move in the right direction?
